3 Causes of Poor Energy Efficiency

Introduction

When the HVAC system in your Latexo, Texas, home can’t keep up with the changing seasons, you may have an issue with efficiency. These common causes of HVAC inefficiency can end up wasting a lot of energy and costing you a lot of money.

Outdated Unit

Most heating and cooling systems will last for about 12-15 years, so if yours is nearing or past this age, you may need to upgrade. Older models don’t operate as efficiently as the newer models with improved technology, so you could end up wasting up to 30 percent of the energy used within the system. The Department of Energy mandates minimum efficiency ratings for heating and cooling systems but older homes may contain units installed before certain mandates went into effect. Upgrading your unit can drastically improve efficiency and help you save money every month.

Wrong Size

Improper HVAC installation or a unit that is the wrong size can contribute to poor efficiency. When your unit is too small, it has to run constantly to manage the indoor temperature. A unit that is too large cycles on and off frequently, which also wastes energy. If the HVAC technician who installed the unit left gaps, heated and cooled air can escape through these spaces. Leaky ducts account for as much as 30 percent of energy waste.

Dirty Ducts

Another common factor of poor efficiency is dirty ducts. As your HVAC system runs, it pulls air through the registers and into the chamber for heating or cooling. Any dirt, dust, pollen, dander, and other debris in the air can settle in the ducts. Over time, your ducts become clogged with these contaminants, forcing the system to work harder to push heated and cooled air through to the vents. Regular duct cleaning will clear out the debris and keep air flowing properly.
